PlantHUB is currently offering 10 PhD positions in the area of plant breeding and production. Successful applicants will carry out their PhD for at least 50% of their time at one of the non-academic partners (Carlsberg Research Laboratory, Carlsberg Group, Deutsche Saatveredlung AG, BaseClear BV, Agroisolab GmbH; LemnaTec GmbH , Heliospectra AB or NPZ Innovation GmbH) and the remaining fellowship months recruited at a world-leading academic host organization (ETH Zurich, University of Zurich or University of Basel).

The specific percentage of time that the successful candidate will spend at each institution is indicated in the specific position announcement. PhD applicants will develop the fundamental research carried out at the academic partner into a marketable application or service together with the involved companies.

Joint supervision by at least two supervisors, one from the partner universities and one representative from the companies are provided. The outcomes are new molecular tools for plant breeding, new forage, cereal and Heliospectra AB; oil crop varieties, non-invasive imaging and phenotyping technologies, intelligent lighting systems for plant growth, new software and services for complex genomic analyses, and plant product quality.

All PlantHUB ESR will follow a PhD programme that is ground-breaking. The PhD training is placed into an entrepreneurial environment of leading public and private organizations. It combines practical hands-on R&D and technology transfer in plant breeding and production with a doctoral program that concentrates on Responsible Research and Innovation training and practise. PlantHUB is funded by the H2020 PROGRAMME Marie Curie Actions – People, Initial Training Networks (ITN) and is managed at the Zurich-Basel Plant Science Center, www.plantsciences.ch. Eligibility conditions:

PlantHUB is open to candidates of any nationality fulfilling the following eligibility criteria: Only early stage researcher can benefit from the PlantHUB programme. Early stage researchers are researchers in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers, including the period of research training, starting at the date of obtaining the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the initial training activities are provided.

  • At the time of recruitment (=first day of the employment) by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the reference date. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account. The mobility requirement will apply to the beneficiary where the researcher is recruited for the first time in the PlantHUB. Recruitment conditions:

Successful applicants will be matriculated at either ETH Zurich, University of Zurich or University of Basel based on the supervisor’s location. All successful candates will follow the PhD programme “PhD Programme in Plant Sciences”. The PhD degree will be awarded by ETH Zurich, University of Zurich or University of Basel after successful completion of the thesis and the doctoral programme.
