CSIRO Postdoctoral Fellowship in Modelling of Metallic Microstructure

The Position Overview

Applications are invited for a three year CSIRO Postdoc Fellowship to develop computational models of the changes in microstructure and related properties that occur in metallic additive manufacturing.

Details:

  1. The approaches developed will be suitable for the rapid and repeated heating and cooling cycles that occur in the additive manufacturing process, and to the titanium and aluminium alloys.
  2. The selected Fellow will work closely with CSIRO’s experimental team and collaborators, benchmarking the microstructure & property model against detailed measurements.

Tasks Involved: Specifically you will:

  1. Develop computational models of the changes in microstructure and related properties that occur in metallic additive manufacturing.
  2. Work closely with experimentalists to benchmark the microstructure and property models against measurements.
  3. Work with other members of the modelling team to integrate the microstructure and property models with models of other aspects of additive manufacturing processes.
  4. Under the direction of senior research scientists, carry out innovative research leading to important new scientific results.
  5. Produce high quality scientific and/or engineering papers suitable for publication in quality journals, for client reports and granting of patents.

 Salary: $80K – $91K plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: Three year specified term
Reference: 48561

Requirements:

  1. A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as Materials Science or Engineering.
  2. Strong track record of research in computational modelling of microstructure evolution in metallic systems during solidification, preferably in titanium and/or aluminium alloys under non-equilibrium conditions.
  3. A basic understanding of the different methods (e.g. phase field method, classical sharp interface method, etc.) available to model microstructure evolution.
  4. Demonstrated experience in computer programming in a high-level language.

How to Apply: The candidate should upload one document only containing your CV/Resume, cover letter and a statement addressing the selection criteria ensuring you provide enough information relevant to this position. If your application proceeds to the next stage you may be asked to provide additional information.

Applications Deadline: 10:59pm AEST, 12 November 2017.
