Mellon Mays Predoctoral Research Grants

The SSRC-Mellon Mays Graduate Initiatives Program purposes to address the problem of underrepresentation in academy at the level of college and university faculties. Supported by grants from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the program provides funding for scholars from all background with a demonstrated commitment to the goal.

The Graduate Initiatives Program offers three predoctoral grant opportunities: the Graduate Studies Enhancement Grant (GSE), the Predoctoral Research Development Grant (PRD), and the Dissertation Completion Grant (DCG). These grants are only open to PhD students who were selected as Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow.

Deadline: Applications for these grants are open from May 1 to November 1 (yearly).

Guidelines: The guidelines refer to all 3 predoctoral grant opportunities are as follows:

  1. Fellows may apply for only one grant per year.
  2. Candidates must be Mellon fellows enrolled in a doctoral program in an eligible field of study.
  3. Each candidate may receive a maxi. of $5,000 in GSE and PRD funds.
  4. The grants cannot be used for tuition fees or living expenses.
  5. Grants are distributed on first-come, first-served basis.
  6. Accepted applications may take 5-6 weeks to process.
  7. August 1 is considered the start of the academic year

 Graduate Studies Enhancement (GSE) Grant

  1. Students must be in their second to fifth years of graduate school; students at South African universities are eligible to apply in the first year of their Master’s programs
  2. Students that have begun the 6th year of graduation are not qualified.
  3. Grants available for up to $1,500 per academic year.

Predoctoral Research Development (PRD) Grant

  1. Students must be in their 2nd to 5th years of graduate school; students at South African universities are eligible to apply in first year of their Master’s programs.
  2. Students that have begun the 6th year of graduate study are not eligible to apply.
  3. Funds available for up to $3,000 once during a fellow’s graduate school career
  4. Funds small-scale, preliminary research and other activities
  5. Students require a letter of support from an committee or advisor member.

Dissertation Completion Grant (DCG)

  1. Students must be in their 7th year or beyond and must specify a possible timeline for completion of the dissertation within 12 months.
  2. Available for up to $2,500 once during a students’s graduate school.
  3. Funds travel, equipment, books, journal subscriptions, and software that support the completion of the thesis
  4. Students need to submit a summary report six months after receipt of the grant.
  5. A competitive award based on the feasibility of timely completion.
