Multiple PhD and Postdoc positions: Computational Relativistic Astrophysics 1799 views

The Computational Relativistic Astrophysics division at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (the Albert Einstein Institute) invites applications for several postdoc and PhD positions. The postdoctoral positions will be available at different levels, depending on experience and seniority, and can last for different number of years. This new division, led by Dr. Masaru Shibata, will be established on January 1st 2018.

Starting date: August 2018, but they may also start earlier

Research areas:

  • numerical relativity with matter, in particular, neutrino-radiation-hydrodynamics, magneto-(radiation-)hydrodynamics, and viscous-radiation-hydrodynamics, for mergers of neutron-star binaries (binary neutron stars and black hole-neutron star binaries), long-term evolution of the merger remnants, and stellar collapse to a black hole and a neutron star,
  • modeling of gravitational waves from neutron-star binaries based on numerical-relativity gravitational waveforms,
  • modeling of electromagnetic counterparts (macronovae/kilonovae, short gamma-ray bursts, etc.) associated with neutron-star mergers, including the studies of r-process nucleosynthesis,
  • studies of the formation processes for a variety of black holes (stellar-mass, intermediate-mass, and supermassive black holes), and gravitational-wave and electromagnetic signals associated with the formation processes,
  • studies of phenomena associated with supermassive black holes, e.g., tidal disruption of stars by supermassive black holes and emission of gravitational waves by extreme mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs),
  • numerical relativity beyond general relativity

Application:
