NMBU: PhD scholarship in Biorefinery 1562 views

The Faculty of Science and Technology at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant three years PhD position related to biorefinery with the focus on microbial lipid production.

Project group

  • The PhD position will be affiliated to a new research center called Bio4Fuels at the NMBU.
  • The PhD project will be performed at the Faculty of Science and Technology.
  • The work in relation to enzymatic saccharification and fermentation processes will be conducted in close collaborate with the Faculty of Chemistry, Biotechnology and Food Sciences

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • To develop fermentation media based on the lignocellulose hydrolysates and rest materials
  • Optimization of submerged moulds fermentation in microtiter plates, 2,5L and 30L fermenters
  • To monitor fermentation with advanced vibrational spectroscopy techniques
  • To measure FTIR spectra of moulds’ biomass after and during fermentation and perform reference analysis by GC-MS of fatty acid composition
  • The successful candidate is expected to enter a plan for the progress of the work towards a PhD degree during the first months of the appointment, with a view to completing a doctorate within the PhD scholarship period.

Qualifications:

  • Applicant must have an academically relevant education corresponding to a five-year Norwegian degree programme, where 120 credits are at master’s degree level.
  • Applicant must have a documented strong academic background from previous studies, and be able to document proficiency in both written and oral English.
  • The applicant must document expertise and interest in the research subject.
  • Applicant must hold Master’s in microbiology or biotechnology
  • Applicant must be fluent in English (both written and oral).
