PhD position Chemical and Process Engineering: PHD STUDENTSHIP position in 3D PRINTING OF POROUS FOOD at the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering

Fixed Term

Post Type: Full Time

Closing Date: Friday 16 June 2017

Reference: 041617

Overview: 3D printing is a versatile additive technique to create complex designs, using a variety of polymers. Application to food systems remain however rare.

In this PhD project,

  1. 3D printing of polysaccharides will be studied aiming at creating controlled porous structures.
  2. Successful 3D printing relies on mastering the rheology of the polymer being printed and its evolution after printing, in order to maintain the desired shape and allow a successful sintering of the next layer with the layers already printed.
  3. This project will consider in particular the interplay between 3d printing conditions (nozzle diameter nozzle and bed temperature, layer thickness, printing speed)
  4. The material rheology in order to identify optimal conditions for a satisfactory 3d printing.

Requirements / Qualifications:

  1. A background in physics, mechanical or chemical engineering,
  2. Capable of developing original experiments and a theoretical description of the physical phenomena at stake.
  3. A documented previous experience in experimental fluid mechanics or rheology is an asset.
  4. Applications should include evidence of meeting U.Surrey’s “English language requirements for postgraduate applicants” and in particular the IELTS level (6.5 overall with no component lower than 6.0) or equivalent certification.

Application Procedure: Applications will be considered on a rolling basis. Applicants should send their CV & covering letter before 16th June to via email:
