Postdoctoral Research Scholar Program: Fellowship Competition 1124 views

The Harriman Institute at Columbia University invites applications for 2 two-year postdoctoral research scholar positions, extending over 2018-19 and 2019-20.

Requirements:

  • The selected scholars are expected to concentrate on their own research and writing; to teach a course of their own design in the spring semester of each of the two years;
  • to give a public seminar/lecture on their research; and to be active participants in the Institute’s scholarly community and events.
  • The Institute provides desk space for all postdoctoral research scholars.
  • The Institute also provides funds to sponsor workshops, conferences, and special events planned by fellows around their particular interests.

Selection criteria:

  • academic excellence

Study areas: Russia, Eurasia, and/or East-Central Europe studies

Eligibility:

  • applicants must have received the PhD between January 1, 2016 and June 30, 2018
  • Applicant must NOT hold a tenure-track position.
  • Applicants must have successfully defended and deposited their dissertations prior to the commencement of the appointment.

Duration: full 2-year

Fellowship value: stipend $56,500; medical benefits; subsidized housing; $2,000 research allowance per annum.

  • Short research plan outlining how the candidate’s time will be spent at the Institute (2-3 pages).
  • CV
  • Scholarly writing sample (one or two chapters of the dissertation or a published article or book chapter related to the candidate’s major research theme) in English.
  • Preliminary syllabus or course concept (defining problem, method expectations of students and brief selection of readings) relevant to the mission of the Institute- 1-2 page
  • 2 confidential letters of recommendation, submitted directly by each referee to bs18@columbia.edu.
  • Decisions regarding the selection of postdoctoral fellows are made by mid-February, and applicants will be notified in a timely manner.
