Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research is a private functional foundation devoted to the progression of anthropology world over. The location is New York City, it is one of the main funding sources for international anthropological research and is keenly engaged with the anthropological community through its diverse grant, fellowship, networking, conference and symposia programs.

Post-doctoral Research Grants are granted to individuals holding a Ph.D. or equivalent degree to support individual research projects. The program contributes to the Foundation’s overall task to support basic research in anthropology and to make sure that the discipline continues. The Foundation backs the research that shows a clear link to anthropological theory and debates, and possibilities to make a solid impact to advancing these ideas.

Grant amount: US $20,000

These funds are for research expenses. Applicants can apply regardless of institutional affiliation, country of residence, or nationality. There is no time limit on the duration of the grant and funding may be requested to cover distinct research phases. Application deadlines are May 1 and November 1.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Qualified candidates are eligible of any nationality, or institutional or departmental affiliation.
  • Applicants must be close to completing their doctorate or equivalent degree or holding the degree.
  • The grant will not be awarded till the degree is completed.
  • Note: Foundation expects the degree to be completed before the start date for the proposed project given by the applicant on the application form.
  • Post-Ph.D Research grant applications that were unsuccessful in earlier cycle may be resubmitted only if they resubmit the statement, explaining how the application is different from the earlier application and how the referees’ comments have been addressed.

  • General information about the candidate and the project
  • Abstract of proposed research.
  • In case application is successful, this abstract will be published on the Foundation’s website.
  • Candidate must make sure that abstract is written in a style that is clearly understandable to a non-specialist
  • Resubmission statement (if the current application) is a resubmission of a earlier declined application
  • Detailed budget of proposed project
  • Bibliography relevant to your proposed project
