PhD position in Cancer Biomarkers Norway

At the newly established Norwegian Centre of Excellence, Centre for Cancer Biomarkers CCBIO, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, a temporary full-time PhD-position is available for a period of three (3) years from 1. August 2015. The position is funded jointly by the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and the Norwegian Research Council. The candidate will be working at Department of Biomedicine and also at Department of Clinical Medicine.CCBIO is directed by Professor Lars A. Akslen and is working on biomarkers in order to attain better and more tailored cancer diagnostics and treatment. The researchers have a special focus on mechanisms and biomarkers related to tumor growth and tumor-microenvironment interactions and the impact this has upon metastasis and poor prognosis. The research activity is organized in three program areas: basic studies and animal models (Program 1), discovery and validation of new biomarkers (Program 2) and clinical studies (Program 3). CCBIO has a strong international profile and interacting collaborators worldwide.

The candidate will work within program 1 focusing on the tumour microenvironment and the role of integrin ⍺11 in experimental as well as human cancer. A long term goal of the project is to develop and validate monoclonal antibodies for integrin detection in human tumor specimens.

Qualifications and qualities

Applicants must preferably hold a MD or alternatively a MSc or equivalent from a relevant field at the closing date of the application.

Applicants must have a Felasa C license and should have experience in conducting experimental cancer research in animals.

Applicants should have experience in immune histochemistry and electron microscopy as well as techniques for protein separation and analysis.

Applicants should be fluent in written and spoken English.

Emphasis will be put upon personal abilities. Applicants with documented ability to work independently, cooperate well, exhibit a high level of motivation and responsibility and have high working capacity and enthusiasm for scientific work will be preferred.

Applicants should not be allergic towards animals or chemicals to a degree that will hamper the ability to carry out the work within the project.

The candidate must take part in the University`s approved PhD programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. You must have admission to the organized research training (PhD program) at the Faculty in order to qualify for the position.

Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training plan must be submitted no later than three months after the date of commencement.

PhD fellowships are fixed term positions. You cannot be employed in a PhD-position for more than one fixed term period at the same institution or had similar employment at an institution in the region.

The salary will be paid in accordance with level 50 (code 1017/L20) on the government salary scale (corresponding to NOK 429.700 per year). Further increases in salary will be based on seniority in the position. For applicants who have completed their internships, salary level 52. Medical specialist start on wage level 58 (code 1017/LR20-15).
