Postdoc in Inorganic Synthesis for Molecular Quantum Nanotechnologies UK

A postdoctoral position is available now, fixed-term for up to 2 years, to undertake experimental research on the synthesis and characterisation of rare-earth based magnetic molecular systems.  Applicants will have research experience in the synthesis of molecular magnets based on rare-earths (possibly under controlled conditions such as glove box and schlenk line), single-crystal and powder X-ray crystallography and magnetic measurements at cryogenic temperatures and their interpretation.

Knowledge of the optical emission properties of these systems, fabrication and nanocharacterisation (ESM or TEM) and pulsed magnetic resonance of electron and nuclear spins are interesting pluses. The post, funded by the European Union via an ERC-StG, is part of a multidisciplinary project Optical Control of Quantum Molecules, led by Dr Lapo Bogani, of programme Molecular Quantum Devices, led by Professor Andrew Briggs. The research line is to be developed in collaboration with Professor Harry Anderson (Chemistry Department).

The post offers an excellent chance to develop practical technologies based on synthetizing multifunctional magnetic materials, controlling optical and magnetic quantum states, and understanding the behaviour of molecular spins in electronic devices. The key challenge is to create tailored rare-earth based molecules to understand the interplay of electronic and spin degrees of freedom in molecular spintronics.

By the start date applicants must have a doctorate in a relevant area of chemical science. They should show a strong command of English and have an outstanding track record of research and publications, in particular first authorship in top-ranking journals, commensurate with stage in career. Please see the job description for full details and selection criteria.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 midday on 27 May 2015 with interviews currently planned for 8 June 2015.
