Senior Scientist positions in Drug Discovery, Analytical Chemistry and Drug Metabolism (Merck) USA

The Discovery Pharmaceutical Science (DPS) group within Global Pharmaceutical Sciences and Clinical Supplies (PSCS) located in Boston, MA is seeking applicants for a Senior Scientist position. DPS is a multi-disciplinary research group that provides drug delivery, solid state and solution chemistry tools in Discovery and Early Development.The successful candidate will have key responsibilities including characterization of potential pre-clinical drug candidates physicochemical properties and the identification of suitable oral and parenteral preclinical formulations for early pharmacology and toxicology studies.

Responsibilities may also include alternate route delivery and various modalities beyond small molecules (e.g. peptides). The candidate will also plan and execute studies for elucidating API chemical degradation pathways and phase optimization. The candidate will closely interact with Discovery, Safety Assessment, Process Research, Analytical Chemistry and Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics, as well as other members of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Clinical Supplies.

Successful candidates will have a PhD with 0-3 years experience in industry or bachelors / masters degree with at least 5 years of experience in industry.

Candidates with experience in preclinical formulation development, solid state characterization or physicochemical property testing with analytical techniques such as X-Ray diffraction, DSC, and HPLC are preferred. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. Strong leadership/interpersonal skills and a motivation to work in a team environment with cross-functional interactions are essential.

Qualifications

Education:
PhD (or expected to graduate within the next 3 months) with 0-3 years experience in industry or Bachelor’s / Master’s degree with at least 5 years of experience in industry.

Required Experience and Skills:

PhD with 0-3 years’ experience or Bachelor’s / Master’s degree with 5+ years of experience within preformulation, analytical chemistry or formulation development.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, demonstrated creativity, strong leadership/interpersonal skills, and the ability to work in a team environment with cross-functional interactions are essential

Preferred Experience and Skills:

Experience with enabled formulations, solid state characterization, polymorphism, and solution chemistry is desirable.

Candidates with experience in analytical techniques (e.g., X-Ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC)) and/or drug delivery and pre-clinical formulation development are preferred.
