Doctoral Programme of Computational Engineering conducts research in computational sciences with applications in the modelling and simulation of industrial processes, as well as basic research in physics and mathematics. The programme consists of collaborating groups in applied mathematics, material physics and machine vision and pattern recognition. A Doctoral Student position will be opened for each of these fields as specified below. For more details of our activities see here.
LUT Doctoral School/Doctoral Programme in Computational Engineering has 3 full-time Doctoral Student positions available from January 1, 2016 or agreed upon separately.
1) The position in Applied Mathematics is on the research field of Inverse Problems that focuses on data-driven problems: to what extent given measurements are able to identify a simulation model. We are part of a large consortium, the Centre of Excellence in Inverse Problems of the Academy of Finland, consisting of teams in six Finnish universities, together with wide international contacts. Our current research questions stem from the collaborations with industry and government research organisations, including topics such as characterizations of chaotic systems of flows, remote sensing of the earth from satellite data, and assimilation methods for weather prediction or greenhouse gas monitoring. The candidate will work on one of these projects. For more details, see here. The candidate should have a strong background in applied mathematics, numerical methods and computational statistics. Fluent skills in programming is necessary, we routinely use Matlab together with the C or Fortran languages.
2) The position in Physics is in the field of Material Physics/Solid State Physics. Physics has strong research collaboration with many Russian research institutes and universities. Focus areas are (1) magnetic and transport properties of semiconductors with magnetic impurities, (2) magnetism in carbon, (3) Atomic Force Microscopic (AFM) investigation of semiconductor nanowires, and (4) superconductors. For first three topics, (1) – (3), we have for experimental investigations a SQUID magnetometer, galvanomagnetic transport measuring system with fields up to 45 T, and an AFM. Topic (4), superconductors, is investigated with computer simulations. The doctoral student will work on one of these four areas. For more details, see here .
3) The position in Machine Vision and Pattern Recognition is for the research of Digital Image Processing and Analysis. The position requires a Master’s degree from a suitable discipline such as Computer Science and Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence, or Machine Learning. Theoretical and practical skills, including knowledge of pattern recognition methods and imaging are expected. The candidate is also expected to have good programming skills, preferably in Matlab, and to be able to communicate fluently in English. The applicant must hold a Master’s degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in a relevant field giving the eligibility for doctoral studies and have the ability and motivation to complete the doctoral degree in the target time of four years. A scientifically sound research proposal or a description of research ideas or interests, as well as the adequacy of the applicant’s research subject to the profile of the Doctoral Programme in Computational Engineering are essential selection criteria. The postgraduate study right required for taking the doctoral degree is to be applied within the one year of the beginning of the employment relationship.
The employment relationship is fixed-term. The position will be available initially for one year and can be extended for another three years provided that the studies and research have progressed well. Also the applicants who already have a doctoral study right at LUT may apply but the employment relationship will be max. four years counted from the beginning of the first employment contract of the doctoral student.
The salary will be determined according to the university salary system for teaching and research personnel, job demand levels 1-4 (1,795.12-2,462.01 EUR/month) In addition, the salary will include an individual pay component based on the performance and competence, amounting to a maximum of 46.3 % of the job-specific pay component.
