Analytical and environmental chemistry PhD position in Switzerland

Empa is the research institute for materials science and technology of the ETH Domain and conducts cutting-edge research for the benefit of industry and the well-being of society. Our Laboratory for Advanced Analytical Technologies develops and implements novel instrumental techniques for inorganic and organic analysis in materials and environmental science.

We are looking for a PhD student in analytical and environmental chemistry.

Be part of an exciting, interdisciplinary research project on novel trace analytical methods for chlorinated paraffins and their transformation products. Chlorinated paraffins are complex mixtures used in a wide range of industrial applications. Despite their high production volume, the environmental fate is largely unknown. In this project, new approaches shall be explored to analyze chlorinated paraffins and transformation products by advanced LC-MS technologies. The established methods will be used to study temporal trends and transformation processes.

Candidates are expected to hold a MSc degree in chemistry, environmental sciences or related discipline. They should be highly motivated for laboratory experiments and field studies, including instrumental analysis by LC-MS. We expect excellent English language skills and an interest in acquiring fluency in German.

The work will be carried out at the Laboratory for Advanced Analytical Technologies at Empa, Dübendorf, under the supervision of Dr. Andreas Gerecke. The project will be performed in close cooperation with the groups of Dr. Christian Bogdal (ETH Zurich) and Prof. Kristopher McNeill (ETH Zurich). The candidate will be enrolled at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich). The position is available upon mutual agreement and for the planned project duration of three years.
