A PhD fellowship is available at Environmental Economics, Department of Food and Resource Economics, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen
Department of Food and Resource Economics, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship in Environmental Economics commencing 1. August 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Project description
The PhD scholarship is part of the European research project MIRACLE – Mediating integrated actions for sustainable ecosystems services in a changing climate.
The overall objective of MIRACLE is to come up with economic sustainable solutions to reduce nutrient enrichment and future flood risks in the Baltic Sea Region. As part of this project University of Copenhagen is involved in a workpackage to identify the economic impact from selected measures to reduce eutrophication and flood risk under different climatic scenarios. The economic assessment will rely on the outcome from a social learning process with interactive modelling and hydrological modelling in four catchment areas in the Baltic Sea Region: Berze (Latvia), Reda (Poland), Helgeån (Sweden), and Selke (Germany),
The Phd student will primarily be engaged in the economic assessments in relation to relevant scenarios in the four case regions. This entails collection of relevant and necessary data from project partners in the four case regions, involving 1) defining and setting up system boundaries for the analyses, 2) assessing the cost structures for sets of nutrient mitigating and flood preventing measures and technologies developed in stakeholder workshops, 3) assessing private and/or social benefits of selected flood preventing and nutrient mitigation measures, to a large extent based on benefit transfer techniques, and 4) delivering results from cost-effectiveness analysis and cost-benefit analysis to serve as input for a social learning process facilitated through a series of stakeholder workshops. Throughout the project, the PhD student is expected to collaborate actively in an interdisciplinary work environment with other project partners in the MIRACLE project.
Applicants with a strong interest in and solid background in environmental economics in relation to the agricultural sector will be preferred. Furthermore, experience with relevant quantitative methods like cost-effectiveness analysis, cost-benefit analysis and benefit transfer methods is an advantage.
