Ph. D. Programme at National Institute of Technology Meghalaya (NIT Meghalaya): Applications are invited for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D.) Programme starting in July 2017.

The disciplines and areas in which the Programme is proposed to be offered (but not limited to) are:

Electrical Engineering

Renewable Energy, Embedded System, Application of Core-Less Induction Heating, Sensorless Control & Vector Control for PM Motor Drives, Control of Renewable Energy System, Digital Image Processing, Pattern Recognition.

Mechanical Engineering

Design & Manufacturing, Hudraulic System Design, Syatem Control, CFD, Solar Thermal Cooling, Liquid Desiccant Cooling Systems, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Systems. Renewable Energy, Heat and Mass Exchangers, Manufacturing, Composite Materials, Machining, Properties of Materials, Tribology, Experimental and CFD Analysis of Fluid Flows and Turbulance Modelling.

Categories of Ph. D. Students:

The Institute shall admit Ph. D students under the following categories:

  • a) Full Time: Scholars under this category shall work full time for the Ph.D. courses/research. They may receive fellowship/assistantship offered by the Institute as per MHRD norms. Fellowship under the Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme for Electronics and IT, sponsored by DeitY, is also offered.
  • b) Sponsored: Recognized R&D organizations, national institutions, other universities, government organizations or industries may sponsor research scholars. They shall be admitted through the normal process, and they shall not be entitled to any fellowship/assistantship from the Institute. They shall work full time for the Ph.D. courses/research.
  • c) Project Fellow: Scholars working on different research projects at the Institute may be admitted to the Ph. D. Programme provided they satisfy the eligibility criteria, subject to the consent of the Principal Investigator of the project.
  • d) Part Time: Scholars employed in academic institutions/ universities (including NIT Meghalaya)/ R&D organizations may be considered for admission into the Ph. D. programme of the Institute, following the normal admission procedures. They shall fulfill the stipulated requirements for Ph. D. admission.

Eligibility Criteria for Admission into Ph. D. Programme:

Master’s degree in appropriate branch of Engineering/ Science/ Technology/ Management Sciences/ or Master’s degree in the allied subjects with consistently good academic record and a minimum of 60% marks) or an equivalent CGPA in the Master’s degree. (Candidates with B.E./ B. Tech. with an aggregate of 75% marks or equivalent GPA with valid GATE score will also be eligible). For those applying for Ph. D in Humanities and Social Sciences, min 55% marks should have been obtained in the Master’s degree.

Relaxation for SC/ST/PD Candidates:

Eligibility criteria will be relaxed by 5% marks or 0.5 CGPA for SC/ST/PD category applicants.

Selection Procedure:

Eligible candidates will be required to appear for a written test on topics in his/ her discipline. Shortlisted candidates based on performance in the written test will be called for interview for the final selection.

Total No of Seats: 35 (Fifteen)

Reservation of Seats for SC, ST, OBC (NCL) and PD categories shall be as per MHRD norms. OBC (NCL) candidates will have to enclose certificate and self-declaration statement in prescribed format. Latest OBC (NCL) Certificate (issued after 01-04-2015) issued by competent authority shall only be acceptable.
