The Department of Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon is one of the premier chemical engineering departments in the country. It has a 100+ year history of innovation and creativity in both teaching and in research. Our primary missions are to educate undergraduate and graduate students, and to discover and disseminate knowledge through research. Graduate programs: For applying to graduate program, prospective students must have completed a regular four-year course in chemical engineering, or a related discipline at a recognized university with better than a B average. Admission is based on overall academic performance, recommendation letters, statement of purpose, Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores, and Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or IELTS scores (if applicable).
Phd program: Admission to the PhD program is further based on a demonstrated commitment to a research-based career via prior research experience. Note that our Masters and PhD degree programs are uncoupled: applicants to the PhD program do not need to have a Master’s degree to be considered for admission, and admitted Carnegie Mellon PhD students do not need to first complete a Master’s degree at Carnegie Mellon. The application deadline for Fall admission to the:
PhD program: December 15
Masters programs: February 15.
The Spring application opens on April 1, and the application deadline for both the PhD and Masters programs is October 15. Admission decisions are announced by April 15 for Fall admission and December 15 for Spring admission. The normal starting date for incoming PhD students is the beginning of the fall semester; students interested in starting at the beginning of the spring semester should first contact the Director of Graduate Admissions before applying. Master’s degree applicants are accepted and enrolled for both Fall and Spring starts.
Masters-level students: provide their own financial support for their studies either from their own resources, employer programs, foundations or governmental agency sources. Masters-level students carrying 36 or more units, a course load for a full-time student, are charged tuition and fees and must carry health insurance. The amount of credit given for each course is measured in units. A unit is equivalent to one-third of a semester credit or semester hour and represents one hour a week spent in either class attendance or outside preparation, throughout a semester of about 14 weeks. Tuition rates are set by the Carnegie Institute of Technology (the college of engineering) and are subject to change without notice, but typically change on an annual basis. Student fees and University-provided health insurance costs are set by the University in consultation with the Graduate Student Association and are also subject to change without notice, but typically change on an annual basis. PhD-level students: are provided with tuition and stipend support via governmental agency, foundation, employer, research grant, research contract and/or college and departmental sources as long as they remain graduate students in good standing. PhD students are responsible for University fees and must carry health insurance. Fees are due and payable at the time of semester registration. These fees do not include books and course supplies. Applications should be submitted using the ApplyYourslf Application. The online form is designed to permit you to edit and revise your application until you are satisfied. Once submitted on-line, you can check on the status of your application online, at any time.
How to apply:
Please upload copies of your statement of purpose, resume and transcripts directly to the ApplyYourself application. Please do not mail additional hard copies of these documents. Also, please refrain from mailing by post other supporting documents such as publications, certificates, or CDs. These items will not be filed with your application and cannot be held by the department.
1. GRE Scores – An official copy of your GRE score report from ETS is required of all applicants. Please note that photocopies will not be accepted.

2. TOEFL/IELTS Scores – If you are an international applicant and your native language/mother tongue is not English, an official copy of your TOEFL or IELTS score report is required and should be reported directly from the testing agency to Carnegie Mellon University. Please note that photocopies of either exam will not be accepted.

- Applicants who are non-native English speakers may only be considered for a TOEFL/IELTS waiver if they attend and complete all four years of a four-year undergraduate program at a U.S. university. Please contact the Graduate Admissions Manager for more details.
- Transcripts – A legible, scanned or digitized copy of your transcripts and degree certificates (if applicable) should be uploaded to the online application. If your transcript is in a language other than English, you must upload an English translation; do not upload the foreign language version. Hard copy official transcripts and proof of degree completion will be requested upon admission into the program.
4. Application Fee – The $65 USD application fee may be paid either online using a credit card at the time of application submission, or via a check or money order payable to “Carnegie Mellon University.” Please note, your application will not be processed or reviewed until the application fee has been received.
5. Recommendation Letters – Three letters of recommendation must be submitted online. Note that we prefer to have at least two letters from faculty at your current academic institution, or most recent institution if you’ve already graduated. For applicants to our research-based graduate degree programs, we also prefer that you include at least one letter from a faculty member, industrial researcher, or government lab researcher who has supervised you in a research setting.
Once all of these items are received by the Graduate Admissions Office, your application will be complete. You can check the status of your application online with your PIN and password. All admissions decisions for the Fall semester will be complete by April 15th each year.
