Information about the research
To supply and support the ever-increasing and still aging population pose challenging demands on society for efficient production of material and health care products. Thus, transforming raw materials into add-on value products in an efficient and atom economical manner is of pivotal importance. Efficiency in organic synthesis is largely determined by the selectivity and atom economy of a reaction. The objective for our lab is to use small organic molecules as catalyst for the generation of high molecular complexity by environmentally benign design. A recent discovery showed that dialkyl imidazoliums (also known as ionic liquids) could be used as potent and selective catalysts for range of reactions. Mechanistic investigations suggest a new type of activation mechanism for these types of reactions, thus opening up new possibilities for benign reaction design. Your project is to evaluate and develop this new and exciting chemistry.
Major responsibilities
The work performed as a PhD student should result in a written and defended doctoral thesis and comply with the objectives of Chalmers for a doctoral degree.
Apart from the scientific objective the PhD student is expected to:
- take part in group responsibilities such as, group meetings, literature presentations and floor duty
- take PhD student courses (60 credits is mandatory to obtain a PhD)
- write a licentiate thesis
- present research at scientific meetings
- take part in teaching activities such as course lab duty
- Position summary: Full-time temporary employment with a competitive monthly salary and full social benefits, limited to a maximum of four years plus teaching and other departmental duties.
Qualifications
To qualify as a PhD student, you must have:
a master’s level degree in chemistry.
At least on course on advanced level in organic chemistry
Degree work in/or related to organic chemistry preferably in synthetic methodology development.
Knowledge with basic analytical and structural determination techniques such as, GC, HPLC, IR, MS and NMR
