Open PhD Positions in Physics and Chemistry at “The Hamburg Centre for Ultrafast Imaging” The main goal of „The Hamburg Centre for Ultrafast Imaging” (CUI) is to observe and analyse the ultrafast dynamics of physical, chemical, and molecular biological processes.

CUI scientists hope to gain a more precise understanding of high temperature superconductivity, magnetism, and the development of ordered molecular structures. This type of insight could result in new high-tech materials. Since this undertaking will require the expertise of many disciplines, scientists from physics, chemistry, biology and medicine have joined forces under the umbrella of the Cluster of Excellence. The novel X-ray and electron sources on the Campus Hamburg-Bahrenfeld are an important tool for scientists in the field of photon and nano science.

CUI relies on strong partners:

Universität Hamburg

Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron, Hamburg

European Molecular Biology Laboratory, Hamburg

European XFEL GmbH, Hamburg

Max Planck Research Department for Structural Dynamics at Universität Hamburg (MPSD)

An additional important feature is the promotion of junior researchers with a clear focus on gender and families.

Within its Graduate School CUI currently offers funded PhD positions in the research areas:

A. Imaging and Control of Quantum Systems

B. Atomically Resolved Structural Dynamics

C. Dynamics of Order Formation on the Nanoscale

The CUI Graduate School offers an interdisciplinary course programme including soft skill courses, winter school and support for participation in international scientific meetings. Universität Hamburg aims to increase the number of women in research and teaching and explicitly encourages women to apply.

Equally qualified female applicants will receive preference in accordance with Hamburg’s Higher Education Act. Severely disabled applicants will receive preference over equally qualified non-disabled applicants.

Further details: The job offers can be found at www.cui.uni-hamburg.de/en/openpositions/

Deadline: Applications are to be submitted online via https://cuiapply.physnet.uni-hamburg.de until 30 June 2015.

An excellent (i.e. minimum 2.0 in the German system or B+ or better in the American or English system) Master’s degree in physics, chemistry or biology is expected.
