PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Biology (Mechanism of photosynthetic water-oxidation) Sweden

At this time we are looking for a PhD student to work in the project Mechanism of photosynthetic water-oxidation. You will work on solving the mechanism of water oxidation in photosynthesis by employing several biophysical techniques, which include membrane-inlet mass spectrometry, NMR relaxation, fluorescence, thermoluminescence and EPR spectroscopy.With these techniques you will study the binding affinities of substrate water to the water oxidizing complex (OEC) in various mutants, the photo assembly of the OEC and the thermodynamic properties of the water-splitting reaction. You will also grow and isolate your samples and perform theoretical analyses. The student will be working under the supervision of Professor Johannes Messinger.

Admission requirements

We are looking for a PhD candidate with enthusiasm for experimental work, who has also an interest in theoretical calculations. A solid background in Chemistry, Physics, Biology or in another relevant field is expected.

The general admission requirements for third-cycle study programmes are a second-cycle degree and completed courses carrying at least 240 higher (ECTS) education credits, at least 60 of which were awarded in the second-cycle, or substantially equivalent knowledge otherwise acquired in Sweden or abroad. The Faculty Board may grant an exemption from the general admission requirements for an individual applicant if there are special grounds for doing so (Higher Education Ordinance, Ch 39).

Anyone who, prior to July 1, 2007, had acquired qualifications meeting the general admission requirements for third-cycle studies then in force, i.e. first-level studies comprising at least 120 credits, or substantially equivalent knowledge acquired in Sweden or abroad, shall be deemed to meet the current general entry requirements, but no later than until the end of June 2015 (Higher Education Ordinance, Ch. 12, item 11).

The specific entry requirements for third-cycle studies in chemistry are studies in chemistry, or some other subject deemed to be directly relevant for the specialisation in question, comprising at least 90 higher education credits, including one or more second-cycle courses carrying at least 15 credits, or equivalent qualifications. As successful applicant you will work within a stimulating and interdisciplinary research team. Thus, enthusiasm, the ability for good team work, and a very good command of the English language, both written and spoken, are key qualifications. Proficiency in Swedish is advantageous.

Further information 

The positions are aimed for PhD studies and research leading to a PhD exam. The position includes a competitive salary for a period of four years research time, provided that expected study and research results are achieved. The position may also include part-time teaching (normally up to 20%). If so, the total time for the position is extended accordingly (up to maximum five years). The position is planned to be filled August 3, 2015 or as soon as possible.

The procedure for recruitment for the position is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance (chapt. 12, 2 §) and the decision regarding the position cannot be appealed.
