PhD position in Atmospheric Aerosol Research (Physics / Chemistry), Germany (2015)

The Atmospheric Physics group at the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science (IAC), ETH Zurich invites applications for a 3-year PhD position on experimental atmospheric aerosol research. The position is integrated into the Ambizione project “Soot Particle Ageing Cloud Effects – SPACE –“ funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).

About the project – Within SPACE, the impact of simulated atmospheric ageing on the chemical composition and the cloud formation potential of soot particles will be investigated. The group has exceptional laboratory facilities and the core instrumentation available for this project consists of a Soot Particle Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (SP-AMS), an Aerosol Time of Flight Mass Spectrometer (ATOFMS), a cloud condensation nuclei counter (CCNC), and an ice nucleation particle counter (INPC). The applicant will be part of Prof. Lohmann’s experimental research group (www.iac.ethz.ch/groups/lohmann) focusing on aerosol mass spectrometry, ice cloud formation, and mixed-phase clouds.

Qualifications / Requirements – We are looking for a PhD candidate interested in experimental work and atmospheric aerosol. The position requires a MSc. (or equivalent) in chemistry, physics, engineering, atmospheric/environmental sciences, or a related field. Sound knowledge of the English language, both oral and written, but also an interest in learning German is expected. Pre-knowledge on aerosol measurement techniques, statistical data analysis and/or programming skills are highly encouraged. The applicant will be supervised by the project leader and should be able to work in a team.

The successful candidate is further expected to have good communication skills and to be willing to interact within an international research environment. Planned starting date is June 1st, 2016. Please contact Dr. Amewu Mensah (amewu.mensah@env.ethz.ch) in case of questions related to the project.
