Pending funding, Universität Hamburg invites applications for a Research Associate for the project “Simulation of changes in weathering fluxes since the Last Glacial Maximum (Ph.D.- opportunity)” in accordance with § 28 (3) of Hamburg’s Higher Education Act (HmbHG*). The position commences on October 1st, 2015.
It is remunerated at the salary level TV-L 13 and calls for 75 Percentage of the regular weekly work hours of work per week.
The short-term nature of this contract is based upon § 2 of the Academic Short-Term Labor Contract Act (WissZeitVG). The term is fixed to three years at the beginning. Successful candidates have the opportunity to further their academic education, in particular through the completion of a doctoral dissertation (Ph.D.). Successful candidates have the opportunity to participate in the Ph.D.-programme of the School of “Integrated Climate System Science (ICSS)”.

Tasks: Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates can also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.
Area(s) of Responsibility: Research on the topics relevant for the project. The scientific goal of the project is to test the hypothesis that the altered matter fluxes from chemical erosion during large-scale glaciations significantly changed land-ocean alkalinity- and P-fluxes. To understand the variation of these fluxes, it is necessary to quantify chemical erosion from the areas where glacial extent variations impact chemical erosion: the area below the ice sheets, glacial sediments, and the exposed shelf. The technical goal will be to deliver a terrestrial weathering module for further integration into the MPI-Earth System Model and thus providing constraints for terrestrial alkalinity-, cation-, and P-fluxes into the oceans.
Requirements: A university degree in a relevant subject. We are seeking candidates having a background in geosciences or environmental sciences, with strong knowledge in relevant disciplines (bio)geochemistry, weathering and/or hydrology. Knowledge in GIS, databases, statistics, geoinformatics and/or modelling is an advantage. The successful candidate will have strong capabilities in team work, is fluent in English and has a disposition to publish results in internationally relevant journals.
