PhD position in biotechnology (biochemistry, biophysics, chemistry, nanoscience), Germany

Universität Hamburg invites applications for a Research Associate for the project “Developing a chip-based membrane protein in vitro translation platform” in accordance with § 28 (3) of Hamburg’s Higher Education Act (HmbHG*). The position commences on 1 September 2015.

Faculty/Department: Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences, The Hamburg  Centre for Ultrafast Imaging (CUI)

It is remunerated at the salary level TV-L 13 and calls for 19.5 Hours of work per week.

The short-term nature of this contract is based upon § 2 of the Academic Short-Term Labor Contract Act (WissZeitVG). The term is fixed to 30 April 2018. The University aims to increase the number of women in research and teaching and explicitly encourages women to apply. Equally qualified female applicants will receive preference in accordance with Hamburg’s Higher Education Act (HmbHG).

Tasks: Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates can also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.

Area(s) of Responsibility: Membrane proteins are key pharmaceutical targets but are difficult to express and purify. This is a particular challenge for structural biology where membrane proteins are still poorly represented in set of known protein structures. We are seeking a motivated PhD student to address this challenge by working on the development of a nanoscale chip-based membrane protein in vitro translation platform. You will be expected to carry out original research in the project area and to complete a doctoral dissertation based on the results obtained during the project.

Requirements: A university degree in a relevant subject. A good Master’s degree in biochemistry, biophysics, chemistry, nanoscience or a related area. You will have experience in any of modern molecular biology, protein expression and purification techniques or synthetic organic chemistry or the production of nanoscale devices using photolithography. Further training will be given as required. Severely disabled applicants will receive preference over equally qualified non-disabled applicants.

Full-time positions currently comprise 39 hours per week.
