PhD student (Diploma or Master of Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Sciences or Renewable Energy) (Reference No. EE 2015/14). PVcomB develops high efficiency wafer-based amorphous/crystalline silicon (a-Sie:H/c-Si) heterojunction solar cells with conversion efficiencies exceeding 20%. Its focus is on industrially relevant processes and materials as well as on scaling of promising new concepts to production-relevant wafer (cell) size. It has a close cooperation with the partner institute EE-IS, focusing on new materials and concepts and also using the new EMIL facility at HZB’s BESSY synchrotron.
Theme: Development of advanced passivated contacts for silicon heterojunction solar cells on thin wafers
Job description
Design, fabrication and characterization of bifacial silicon heterojunction solar cells based on very thin silicon wafers with focus on relevance for industrial application:
- Experimental realization of a new cell design with advanced highly-transparent, passivated contact based on PECVD silicon oxide and metal oxide
- Implementation of highly-transparent TCO and metal contact grids
- Modelling/simulation of these cells using software packages such as the HZB’s numerical simulation tool AFORS-HET and optical models/tools
- Development of optimized device design based on the simulations/modelling
- Obtaining a realistic estimate of ultimate efficiency limits in the cells, based on calibrated simulations, and understanding the physical reason for these limitations.
