Postdoctoral Scholar-Polymer Chemistry at University of California, Merced, California, United States. The University of California, Merced is a dynamic new university campus in Merced, California. The University opened in September 2005 as the tenth campus of the University of California and the first American research university in the 21st century. The Functional Nanomaterial Research Laboratory directed by Professor Jennifer Lu is an interdisciplinary research group developing hierarchical transducer material platforms for energy conversion, storage and sensing. We are recruiting a highly motivated and qualified postdoctoral scholar to synthesize a new low-energy driven mechano responsive polymer system for zero thermal expansion composites, thermal actuation and energy conversion applications.

The successful candidates should have experience in the following two key areas:

1) Synthesis of organic small molecules is must, and knowledge in polymer synthesis is a plus.
2) Be well versed in the use of a variety of spectroscopic techniques to determine materials composition, and knowledge in materials property characterization such as mechanical properties and thermal expansion coefficient is valuable to the project.

The candidate is expected to stay on the top of recent publication, develop research ideas and write research papers. She/he will assist with mentoring graduate and undergraduate students who will work on the project, maintain the lab hygiene and be in charge of all spectroscopic measurement equipment. Occasional travel is required.

Qualifications / Requirements: Applicants must have obtained a PhD in one of the following or closely related areas prior to starting the position in chemistry, polymer science or a related area. Strong written and verbal communication skills required. Highly self-motivated individuals who have demonstrated the ability to conduct independent scientific research successfully are desirable.

How to Apply:

Interested applicants are required to submit

1) a cover letter

2) curriculum vitae and

3) a list of three references with contact information including mailing address, phone number and e-mail address.

Salary is based on the University of California Academic Salary Scales.

Review of applications will begin immediately. Position is open until filled with a final closing date of June 30, 2016. Starting dates are negotiable. Please contact Jennifer Lu at jlu5@ucmerced.edu for additional information.
