Post-Doctoral Fellow in Experimental Neuroscience

One position as Post-doctoral fellow (SKO 1352) is available at the Division of Physiology, Department of Molecular Medicine, Institute of Basic Medical Sciences (IMB), University of Oslo. The position is affiliated with the group of Professor Erlend A. Nagelhus on a collaborative project with Associate Professor Koen Vervaeke. The project is funded by the Research Council of Norway (FRIMEDBIO). The position is for a period of 2 years with a possible extension of 1 year, and is available from August 1 2015.

Department: Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Division of Physiology

The IMB pursues education and research to promote basic medical knowledge in order to understand normal processes, provide insight into mechanisms that cause illness, and promote good health.

The IMB has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

No one can be appointed as a post-doctoral fellow for more than one specified period at the same institution.

Project

A better understanding of the neuron-glial-vascular interactions in neural processing and plasticity is of utmost importance to understand and promote healthy development, learning, and recovery from disease. We aim at deciphering cortical circuit function in fully awake behaving animals using all-optical methods for manipulation and recording of cell activity. The project focuses on the barrel cortex and involves a sensory discrimination task.

We are searching for a highly motivated candidate with strong interest in cortical circuits and neuron-glial-vascular interactions. The candidate will use state of the art in vivo multiphoton imaging techniques to investigate cortical microcircuits. Genetic and optogenetic perturbations will be used to identify cell-specific contributions to sensory processing. We offer broad training possibilities in the required experimental methods within a stimulating academic environment.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will use two-photon microscopy and perform functional imaging of identified brain cells and blood flow in awake, behaving mice. We seek candidates with strong background in at least one of the following disciplines; electrophysiology, rodent behavior, two-photon microscopy or optogenetics. The candidate should be creative, critical and organized in analyzing data. Competence in rodent behavior protocols, microsurgery, and programming  (Matlab/Python/LabVIEW) are a plus. Highly motivated candidates that do not fulfill all the criteria will have the opportunity to learn the necessary skills in the lab.

Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent degree. The candidate should be able to work independently and structured, while at the same time engage in close collaborations. Emphasis will be attributed to team-working abilities and personal skills.

In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on the relevance of the candidate’s background.

A good command of English is required.
