One postdoctoral position is available in the group of Thomas Just Sørensen, Department of Chemistry, Nano-Science Center, University of Copenhagen. The suitable candidate will have experience in advanced microscopy and/or lanthanide spectroscopy on complexes in solution. The position is offered for a project involving collaboration with microscopy expert Tom Vosch and the CFIM, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. Many of the trivalent lanthanide ions have unique optical properties such as narrow emission lines, long emission decay times, and emission in the near infrared part of the spectrum. These optical properties can be used to give contrast in optical microscopy.
We have been developing and demonstrating new optical microscopy techniques exploiting the unique optical properties of lanthanide ions. The successful candidate will be tasked with continuing this work, and translating it to a bioimaging setting. The work will involve old as well as new lanthanide based probes. As the lanthanides are also heavy element that gives rise to contrast in electron microscopy, the candidate will also be testing these probes in correlated light and electron microscopy (CLEM).
The postdoctoral candidate should hold a PhD degree in e.g. chemistry, nanoscience, microscopy, or related fields. They should have a strong publication record and preferably a previous postdoctoral experience. Experience with supramolecular chemistry and host–guest assembly, lanthanide spectroscopy, fluorescence-based microscopy, single molecule microscopy experiments, lanthanide coordination chemistry, cell growth and staining, and/or some elementary programming are a strong advantage.
The candidate must work actively within an international, cross-disciplinary group of researchers: therefore strong communication and interpersonal skills are required. Excellent written and spoken English is mandatory.
The position is available from September 15th 2015 or soon thereafter.
Note that the Villum Foundation require that the date for obtaining the PhD degree must not be less than 3-years on October 1st 2015, and the PhD must not have been obtained at the University of Copenhagen.
Applicants must apply online by clicking on “APPLY NOW” below.
The application must include:
- Motivation/Cover letter (max 1 page)
- Curriculum vitae including List of publications
- Copies of diploma/degree certificates
- 1 or more recommendation letters highlighting any skills or experience particularly relevant for the project.
Applications will be assessed upon receipt and position will be filled from October 1st2015 or soon thereafter.
Deadline for applications is September 20th 2015 at 11:59pm CET.
Applications will be handled and processed by the main supervisor and an assessment committee. The University of Copenhagen wishes to reflect the diversity of society and welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.
