Medical Radiation Physics is a broad and complex translational research topic that deals with radiation physics applied to medicine and biology for medical radiation imaging and radiation therapy. Radiation treatment is one of the main therapeutic modalities for the treatment of cancer involving the use of photons, electrons, protons or heavier ions. The interest in radiation therapy using protons has increased in recent years due to their potential advantages with respect to dose conformation to the target and also the increased relative biological effectiveness in comparison to photon radiotherapy.
The Swedish national proton centre, Skandionkliniken, operated by 7 university hospitals, is planned to start clinical operation in the summer of 2015. The clinical work at Skandionkliniken is expected to be accompanied by strong research activities and therefore the research project proposed in connection to this postdoctoral position is focused on proton radiation therapy. The project will be performed in conjunction to the ongoing research projects performed within the Medical Radiation Physics group which include the key topics in proton therapy:
Proton treatment planning comparison to photon therapy
Proton treatment evaluation and optimisation
Radiation protection aspects related to the risk of secondary cancer following proton therapy
The use of proton beams for performing grid therapy might also be explored.
Medical Radiation Physics Group consists of 12 members including 8 PhD students. Medical Radiation Physics is part of the Department of Physics, Stockholm University, located at AlbaNova University Center. The whole department has about 200 employees, 80 graduate students and 250 undergraduate students. Medical Radiation Physics is located within the Karolinska Hospital in close proximity to the Oncology and Radiotherapy Clinic.

Eligibility criteria
To qualify as a postdoctoral fellow you must have a PhD or a foreign degree equivalent to a doctorate in the field of Medical Radiation Physics, Medical Physics or equivalent.
Assessment criteria
The successful applicant will be selected based on documented knowledge relevant for the area of study, knowledge of scientific instrumentations and method, analytical skills, personal motivation and team working skills. Excellent ability to express themselves in written and spoken English is required. The applicants are encouraged to provide supporting documents that substantiate qualifications, e.g., knowledge, skills, abilities and experience. References and interviews will be used to assess qualifications of the applicants. We seek motivated candidates with talent for methods development and programming.
Terms of employment
The position is a two-year full-time appointment. The expected starting date is immediate or mutually agreed.
