The Research Group for Moctoral researcher or PhD student) in the area of Marine Biogeochemistry
The position (pay rate E13TV-L) offers the opportunity to perform a PhD research project (66% part time, for 36 months). Also candidates already holding a PhD are invited to apply (full time, for 24 months). The position is suitable for part-time work. The appointment will start February 1st, 2016 or later.
The successful candidate will perform research on the biogeochemistry of dissolved organic sulfur in coastal marine systems, in the context of a Brazilian-German collaborative project funded by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and Funda o de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ). The cycling of organic sulfur in the oceanic water column has both atmospheric and oceanic consequences, but the sources of most sulfur compounds, their cycling in the ocean and their function for marine life are unknown. The molecular characterization of organic sulfur is a key for understanding its function and reactivity. State-of the-art analytical techniques will be applied, including ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry via the Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance technique (FT-ICR-MS). Planning of and participation in land- and ship-based field campaigns of several weeks duration, also in remote areas in North Brazil, will be essential part of the research, as well as regular visits at our partner’s university (Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense, Prof. Dr. Carlos Rezende).
Applicants must have an academic university degree (Master or equivalent) in chemistry or related fields. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in analytical chemistry, in the handling of large data sets and in scientific writing and presentation. Proficiency in English is required; knowledge of Portuguese or Spanish is advantageous.
Questions with respect to this position can be addressed via e-mail to Prof. Dr. Thorsten Dittmar (thorsten.dittmar@uni-oldenburg.de).
The Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg is dedicated to increasing the percentage of women in science. Therefore, female candidates are particularly encouraged to apply. In accordance with Lower Saxony legal regulations (NHG 21), equally qualified female candidates will be given preference. Applicants with disabilities will be employed preferentially if equally qualified.
