Research Assistant (ORC semiconductor physics and epitaxy, 2 positions): Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at Tampere University of Technology, founded in 2000, is the leading research center in optoelectronics and photonics in Finland. High-quality fundamental and applied research is carried out in two main research areas, which are Nanotechnology and Ultrafast and Intense Optics. In 2014, ORC runs 40 research and collaborative projects, has a budget of about 6.0 M€ and employs 70 people. The Semiconductor Technology Group of Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) is one of the most renowned European research groups in the field of Molecular Beam Epitaxy and development of optoelectronics devices. The group has contributed to emergence of several spin-off companies seeding the photonics industry in Tampere. The current research areas are focused on the development of vertical cavity lasers with visible emission, ultra-high efficiency solar cells, epitaxial technologies for III-V nanostructures, laser diodes for spectroscopy and atomic clocking, and optical integrated circuits. The group is actively collaborating with more than 30 international research partners and a large number of industrial partners.

Job description: ORC’s semiconductor technology group has two openings for research assistants/diploma students to work in the research and development of novel optoelectronic devices and nanomaterials.

The positions are associated with the fabrication of semiconductor nanostructures using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), a state-of-the-art method for growing single-crystalline semiconductors. The job includes material fabrication and characterization.

For the semiconductor synthesis, the candidates will operate an MBE reactor. This will involve designing semiconductor multilayer structures as well as planning and preparing reactors runs. The candidates will also participate in reactor maintenance and services and thus gain expertize in vacuum technology. The successful candidates will also characterize the semiconductor structures by various methods, such as photoluminescence spectroscopy, microscopy, and X-Ray diffraction to learn their physical properties.

Requirements: We are looking for motivated individuals with an interest in leading-edge research. You should also be self-starting and able to manage your own actions and priorities according to the goals of the team. It is expected that the candidates write their master’s thesis in ORC.

It is expected that the candidate will complete the M.Sc. We appreciate studies with good grades in the fields relevant for the positions like physics, material science, optics, electronic materials.

In addition to academic qualifications, practical skills are highly appreciated.

We offer: ORC offers the opportunity to work in a youthful environment with strong ties with the top international research organizations. The candidates have the ability to conduct cutting edge research in the fields of molecular beam epitaxy and laser physics and possibility to continue their studies towards a doctoral degree at ORC.
Salary: The salary will be based on both the job demand level and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of the Research Assistant is placed on the job demand level 1. In addition, employees will receive performance based salary, which for Research Assistants is based on their study credits.
Trial period: Trial period of 3 months applies.
Other: The positions will be filled for a fixed-term period commencing on 1 March 2015, or as mutually agreed until, 31st of August 2016.
