Experimental Quantum Networking

2 PhD positions for 3.5 year are available in the Ion Trap Cavity-QED and Molecular Physics Group in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Sussex. Project: Experimental Quantum Networking

This project brings together two distinct areas of quantum information processing, single ions stored in radio-frequency traps, and single photons in optical fibres. Both the fields, there have been remarkable advances recently. The main challenge in the field is to enhance quantum processing power by scaling up current devices to larger quantum systems. This will be a world first achievement and of fundamental importance for quantum processing, as it provides a building block for large-scale quantum networks.

Amount Awarded: £14057(2015-16) per annum tax-free grant and waiver of UK/EU fees each year for 3.5 years. Full-time study

Eligibility Criteria:

• I^st class degree in Physics or a 2.1 degree with a Master’s or equivalent non-UK qualifications.
• Overseas students must have English at IELTS 6.0 or equivalent, and international students requiring a visa must have an English certificate.
• The costs covered are for UK and EU student fees only of £4068/annum. Overseas students can apply but must have a plan for raising the addition sums required for the higher fees.

Timetable:

• Early applications are recommended. The studentship will be assigned as soon as a suitable candidate is found.
• Expected start date at Sussex is September 2016 although other starts dates may be negotiable.
• This is a full-time studentship. With agreement of the guide the student may take on a limited amount of teaching, for which additional payment will be made.
• The award includes an additional training grant of £1250/annum for short courses, books, travel, conferences etc.
