Postgraduate candidate: Molecular Biology and Genetics 1162 views

A Postgraduate candidate is required for the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships for Foreign Scholars 2017-18 A.Y. The position is available for 01 (one) year. The position is in Extracellular Matrix Rejuvenation Laboratory of Dr. Collin Y. Ewald, Department of Health Sciences and Technology.

Scholarship Value and Duration:

  • The scholarship will support full-time research for a PG (Bachelor’s or Master’s degree) at ETH
  • Scholarship is for 12 months starting in September 2017.

About the Project:

  • The purpose of the project is to study the molecular mechanism(s) that prolong health during aging, using the nematode elegans, in order to develop novel strategies to treat age-related pathologies.
  • Aging is the major risk factor for developing diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and neurodegenerative disorders.
  • Our recent work has shown that many health- and longevity-promoting interventions re-activate the expression of extracellular matrix (ECM) genes during aging
  • This ECM enhancement is required and sufficient for extending the lifespan of elegans.
  • The recipient will join the research efforts to explore this new and exciting mechanism of how prolonged ECM homeostasis promotes healthy aging.
  • Research will use various techniques like molecular biology, genetic screening, fluorescent microscopy, Western blotting, chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP), CRISPR-Cas9 and transgenic elegans strain engineering, quantitative RT-PCR, RNA-sequencing, bioinformatic analysis, and C. elegans longevity assays.

Requirements:

  • Applicant must be highly motivated and must have great enthusiasm for aging research; capabilities to creatively solve problems
  • Applicant must hold Master of Science in molecular biology, biochemistry, or genetics.
  • NO prior experience with elegans is required.

Applications:

  • Submit applications online with the following documents:
  • CV including publication list
  • Grade (academic) transcripts
  • Motivation letter describing research experiences and interest (1 page)
  • 3 potential referees.
