Position as PhD Research fellow available at the Department of Biosciences, Centre for Integrative Microbial Evolution CIME, Norway.
The fellowship will be for a period of 3 years, with no compulsory work or for a period of 4 years, with 25 % compulsory work (teaching responsibilities at the department) contingent on the qualifications of the candidate and the teaching needs of the department.
Starting date no later than 01.10.2015. No one can be appointed for more than one fixed-term period at the same institution.
Job Description
The position will be connected to the Centre for Integrative Microbial Evolution CIME which is a strategic research initiative at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The main objective of the PhD project is to understand the diversity of regulatory genetic elements among the Choanozoa and relate these molecules to the evolutionary transition from unicellular eukaryotes to multicellular animals.
The overall goal with the project is to reveal morphological evolution in unicellular eukaryotes and the underlying genetic mechanisms. This goal will be addressed by using Dasycladales or Choanozoa as model system and research on several levels of –omics and reverse genetics. Investigation of modules of gene regulatory systems and cis-regulatory elements is central, and covers conventional protein-coding genes and regulatory non-coding RNA. Altogether, the experimental work will include growing of algal cultures, extraction of genomic DNA, mRNA and microRNA at several growth stages and at different point in the life cycle.
Requirements:
The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in biology. In addition, candidates should have strong skills and interest in evolutionary biology of protists. The ideal candidate has good skills and experience from RNA and DNA extraction and cDNA synthesis, next generation sequencing technology and bioinformatic applications for quality assessment assembly of sequences, and taxonomic and genetic annotation. Experience with as well as in situ hybridization and knowledge about Dasycladales or Choanozoa is an advantage.
We particularly seek candidates that will be able to work with several members of the CIME group, and that can act as good catalyst for collaborative work. A good command of English is required.
The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.
The fellowship requires admission to the research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The application to the PhD programme must be submitted to the department no later than two months after taking up the position. For more information see:
