Biometrika is actually the name of a journal of statistics in which emphasis is laid on papers containing original theoretical contributions of direct or potential value in applications.

From time to time, papers in bordering fields are also published.

Biometrika is produced by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Biometrika Trust.

Biometrika Trust is offering Biometrika Research Fellowship for 2018. The fellowship can be taken at Universities in United Kingdom.

Nationality: open for all nationalities

Duration of the fellowship: 2 or 3-year research fellowship, for junior researchers

Subject Areas: Statistical theory or methodology. Despite the name of the Trust, the research need not be biostatistical

The fellowship is aimed at those among the most outstanding recent PhD graduates who are capable of self-direction.

Scholarship Award Value: The fellowship offers:

  • An annual salary on the scale £33,518-£37,551 (plus London weighting if appropriate)
  • Research support costs of £4000 for 2 years or £5000 for 3 years
  • Up to £5000 funding for a ‘career development event’ to be planned and organized by the Fellow.
  • Applications should be made by the candidate himself, who should have identified and sought the support of a suitable UK host department.

Eligibility for the Scholarship: 

  • No restrictions on citizenship.
  • The applicant must have a PhD degree.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with at most 3 years of post-doctoral experience.
  • The fellowships must be hosted or arranged for in a UK university or in a suitable UK public-sector research institution.
  • Compliance with UK Visa requirements: it is the responsibility of the host department to get UKVI approval once an award is made.
  • Evidence of proficiency in English would be required from applicants whose first language is not English.

Required Documents:

  • A covering letter of about 1 page should be presented.
  • The letter should enlist and explain in general:
  1. future research direction
  2. career plans and the benefit from a Biometrika Fellowship as well as
  3. indicating proposed start date
  • A detailed CV including names and contact details of three referees.
  • Reference letters should not be included with the application.
  • The website links to completed but unpublished papers must also be provided.
  • Description of planned research programme if offered a Biometrika Fellowship.
  • The description should not be more than 4 pages. It should include the following information:
  1. What are the research achievements so far?
  2. How have they been published or presented?
  3. What impact have they had?
  4. What is the background to the proposed research?
  5. What research will the individual undertake?
  6. Why is it important and timely?
  7. What impact does the candidate think it will have?
  8. Why is the individual applying for a 2 or a 3-year fellowship?
  9. The fellow should enlist the areas of the proposed research that are speculative or adventurous and also the ones which are more ‘safe’?
  • How independent is the applicant and the proposed research plan?
  • How much does the applicant rely on his/her thesis advisor or another collaborator?
  • Why is the proposed host department appropriate? Preference would be given to candidates wishing to move to a new location.
  • What is the current plan for disseminating the research in the form of conference presentations, papers or other media?
  • Justification for travel costs (for conferences and research collaborations) and other research support resources, up to a total of £4K.
  • The applicant must be able to plan for a career development event for young statisticians.
  • The funding of up to £5K would be provided by Biometrika.
  • The applicant should provide a letter of support from host institution(s0).
  • The letter should describe:
  1. Research environment
  2. the presence of cognate researchers and
  3. promise of mentoring as well as expectations on the Fellow in terms of teaching and other duties.
