PhD Fellowship in Carbon Sequestration (Trapping Efficiency)

PhD Fellowship in Carbon Sequestration in the Trapping Efficiency in Heterogeneous Rocks (Fully Funded) at the University of Cambridge (UK)

DEPARTMENT: Department of Earth Sciences, BP Institute, University of Cambridge

REFERENCE: LB15370

Field of Study: Carbon Sequestration (Trapping Efficiency in Heterogeneous Rocks)

Supervisor: The Position is supervised under Prof Andy Woods BP Institute at the University of Cambridge

Project Description:

Carbon Sequestration involves the injection of CO2 into subsurface aquifers & other porous layers in order to store CO2 produced as the product of combustion. A major challenge for sequestration is the prediction of the fraction of the pore space which may be accessed by injection of CO2 & hence which will be available for carbon storage.

Tasks involved: This project will involve the development of models & laboratory experiments to explore the trapping efficiency of various types of permeable rock when CO2 is injected into the rock. This work will build from several models of carbon sequestration but focusing on this critical aspect of sequestration.

The student will have to access to historical data sets along with interacting with the BP carbon sequestration team as well as being part of a large research effort into carbon sequestration in the BP Institute, broadly the University of Cambridge.

Type of Position: Fixed-term

Fellowship: The funds for this post are available for 3.5 years in the first instance.

Further Information: For further information, please contact Andy Woods (aww1@cam.ac.uk), quoting reference LB15370 on your application and in any correspondence about this vacancy.
