PhD / Doctoral Fellowship: Functional Organic Molecules

PhD / Doctoral fellowship in Functional Organic Molecules for Spintronics within the group of Prof. Dr. Michal Juricek at the Department of Chemistry, University of Zurich (UZH).

UZH is looking for a highly motivated candidate who would like to pursue a PhD in Organic Chemistry.

Research Overview

Our group develops functional materials based on organic molecules for applications in ‘spintronics’.

The projects revolve around spin-delocalized open-shell systems & are at the interface between
organic synthesis, materials science & supramolecular chemistry.

The aim is to learn how to introduce and control multiple functionalities in a bulk material, by manipulating spin interactions between unpaired electrons.

Funding: Funded by the European Research Council (ERC), Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), University of Zurich (UZH).

Responsibilities and conditions

The appointed PhD candidate will be involved in the design and synthesis of open-shell molecular systems and investigation of their properties both in solution and in the solid state by experimental techniques such as electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography and with the aid of theoretical methods such as DFT.

Duration: Maximum 4 years

Starting date: September – October 2018

Application deadline: August 31, 2018

Eligibility Conditions

  1. completed (or soon to be completed) Master’s degree in chemistry (MSc or equivalent)
  2. outstanding track record (excellent grades, graduation with honors, summa cum laude, or
equivalent, academic awards at the university level)
  3. experience in a synthetic organic laboratory, including work under air-free and moisture-free
conditions and experience with spectroscopic techniques (NMR, UV/Vis, etc.)
  4. excellent English language skills (written and oral), German language is a plus but not mandatory
  5. experience with studying abroad (e.g., Erasmus, etc.) is welcome

Applications Procedure

Applications should include a motivation letter (maximum. 1 page), CV (maximum. 2 pages), summary of past accomplishments (maximum. 2 pages), and names and contact details of at least two referees should be sent by post or email ([email protected]) to: Prof. Dr. Michal Juríček Department of Chemistry, University of Zurich, Winterthurerstrasse 190, CH-8057 Zurich, Switzerland.
