The Ernst Ruska-Centre (ER-C) for Microscopy and Spectroscopy with Electrons at Forschungszentrum Jülich is inviting applications for 2019D-190 – PhD position – Advanced electron ptychography for materials and life sciences.
About the position:
- Perform experiments with state-of-the-art aberration-corrected low-voltage STEM machines equipped with ultrafast cameras to record 4D STEM data of 2D materials and biological as well as soft matter specimen
- Automate multidimensional data acquisition and evaluation is to a high level
- Implement and test novel ptychographic reconstruction schemes in close cooperation with mathematicians, X-ray scientists and IT experts
- Acompanying simulations to validate results, to optimise acquisition and reconstruction parameters and to frame ranges of validity of ptychographic schemes in electron microscopy
- Play a key role in the methodological development of momentum-resolved STEM techniques
- Duration of the contract is 3 years.
Requirements:
- Applicant must hold Master’s degree in Physics
- A background and strong interest in scattering theory, solid state physics and/or experiences in electron microscopy are desirable
- Programming experience in, e.g., Matlab, Python and experience in the field of structural biology/biophysics is beneficial.
- Applicant must possess fluency of written and spoken English
- Applicant must be able to work autonomously in close interaction within a team.
