The Photons for Engineering and Manufacturing Group at Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is are looking for a PhD Student in Materials Science (Operando X-ray diffraction and imaging during additive manufacturing of multi-materials).
Tasks and responsibilities:
- Assist with the development of a new recoater system for 3D printing of multi-materials
- Perform operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction and imaging experiments during selective laser melting
- Use advanced characterisation techniques such as electron microscopy and X-ray fluorescency mapping to investigate the microstructure of 3D printed samples
- Study the structural integrity of printed components by mechanical testing
- Collaborate with PhD students and postdocs within PSI and from EPFL, ETHZ and EMPA, as well as with the project team
- Publish results in scientific journals and present findings at international conferences
Requirements:
- Applicant must hold Master degree in Physics, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering or related fields
- Good communication skills in English
- Affinity with experimental work
- Experience with programming is an asset
