Forest Ecophysiology, PhD at ETH Zürich, Switzerland 1936 views

Forest Ecophysiology, Grassland Sciences group under the supervision of Prof. Nina Buchmann, at the Institute of Agricultural Sciences (ETH Zürich) opens applications for a PhD Position. Research within the “Leaf2Canopy” project will aim on enhanced characterization and amalgamation of forest canopy structural and biochemical vertical profiles to upgrade leaf to canopy photosynthesis.

Forest Ecophysiology project goals:

  • Heterogeneity of leaf level properties within canopies
  • The complexity of canopy structure.
  • It’s an interdisciplinary project, at the intersection of plant physiology, carbon modelling and remote sensing.
  • Thorough investigational work will be carried out in Switzerland.
  • Responsibilities include setting up and maintenance of sensors for continuous micrometeorological and phenological data acquirement as well as field trips to measure canopy structure, leaf biochemical, morphological and optical properties as well as photosynthesis.
  • The data collected will be used to test different hypothesis of photosynthesis models. Participation is expected in the expansion of improved leaf to canopy integration and up-scaling schemes to be used in available models.

Qualifications:

  • Candidate must be self-motivated, reliable and motivated student with Master’s or equivalent in Plant Ecophysiology, Physical Geography, micrometeorology, Remote Sensing, Environmental Sciences or related disciplines.
  • The aspirant shall have a strong interest in process and system oriented research and should be good in quantitative data analysis.
  • Experiences and skills in field work under tough conditions, experimental and/or modeling work are highly valuable.
  • Proficiency in English language and driving license are required.
  • The research will be carried out within a three year project.

Application Procedure:

  • Completely filled online application
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Grade transcripts
  • Motivation letter
  • Applications should address ETH Zürich, Mr. Olivier Meyrat, HR.
