Assistant Professor in Inorganic Chemistry

The National Institute of Education (http://www.nie.edu.sg/) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Inorganic Chemistry at the Natural Sciences & Science Education Academic Group (NSSE AG). The NSSE AG (http://www.nie.edu.sg/academic-groups/natural-sciences-and-science-education) conducts teaching and research in science and science education and comprises academic staff with backgrounds in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Design & Technology and Family & Consumer Sciences. It has facilities for academic research as well as for carrying out pre-service and in-service workshops for teachers to support Singapore’s schools and science educators.

The position is available from January 2016 onwards. The successful candidate will be offered a 3-year contract position in the first instance.

Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in Chemistry, particularly in the field of Inorganic Chemistry (includingBioinorganic Chemistry and Organometallic Chemistry). Other duties include coordination of courses, conducting of content upgrading for in-service teachers and provision of expert advice to schools on science research projects. The incumbent will be expected to supervise teacher trainees in practicum attachments and mentor graduate students (Masters and PhD levels). He/She is required to conduct research and publish in high impact peer-reviewed journals within the broad area of Inorganic Chemistry. Candidates with the ability to conduct interdisciplinary research (e.g., Chemistry with Biology, Chemistry with Chemistry Education) are preferred. In addition, the appointee may be requested to serve on committees within the Institute/University and offer consultancy and professional services to the Ministry of Education and other public education-related organizations.

Qualifications and Requirements
The successful candidate should have a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry from a reputable university. He/She should be well-versed in experimental techniques in chemistry as well as demonstrate competence in teaching Inorganic Chemistry and General Chemistry. The candidate must be committed to excellence in teaching and in communicating science to teachers and students in primary and secondary schools in Singapore. Having post-doctoral experience, prior experience of teaching (as a teaching assistant or instructor) or having studied or conducted research in Asia, especially in multilingual and multicultural environments, are desirable.
