EDMS Molecular Life Sciences: The Doctoral Program in Molecular Life Sciences (EDMS) aims at providing doctoral students with the education necessary to become leaders in biological research, implementing the latest state of the art. The combination of laboratory based research with access to modern technological platforms, coursework, in-house seminars, national and international conferences, etc., forms the basis of this education.

About the organization: École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) – EPFL is Europe’s most cosmopolitan technical university with students, professors and staff from over 120 nations. A dynamic environment, open to Switzerland and the world, EPFL is centered on its three missions: teaching, research and technology transfer. EPFL works together with an extensive network of partners including other universities and institutes of technology, developing and emerging countries, secondary schools and colleges, industry and economy, political circles and the general public, to bring about real impact for society.

Major research areas: The program’s themes include:

  • cell biology,
  • developmental biology,
  • biochemistry & biophysics,
  • molecular genetics,
  • cancer research,
  • microbiology,
  • host-pathogen interactions,
  • immunology,
  • systems biology,
  • computational biology,
  • human genetics,
  • stem cells,
  • metabolism,

Besides the research groups of ISREC (Swiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research) and GHI (Global Health Institute), researchers of BMI (Brain Mind Institute), IC (School of Computer and Communication Sciences), IBI (Institute of Bioengineering), SB (School of Basic Sciences) and the NIHS (Nestlé Institute of Health Sciences) are also part of our PhD program and offer exciting PhD positions to talented and ambitious young researchers.

Key dates: There are two yearly application deadlines: May 1st and November 15th (Interview dates are given below). Your application and all the requested documents must have been duly filled in, downloaded and validated on line by the deadline at the latest!!

Requirements / Qualifications: Doctoral studies normally begin after award of a M.Sc. (Master’s) degree in the relevant discipline. Candidates with a 4-year or 5-year B.S. (Bachelor’s) degree may also apply. However, this requires consideration of the specifics of your education, which you should explain in the Statement of Objectives letter when you apply.

If you are currently enrolled in a M.Sc. degree program, your application can be considered for admission before you obtain your Master’s degree; however, you must have your degree in hand at the time you begin your doctoral studies at EPFL.Exempt from the application procedure are medical students who have successfully passed the Lausanne or the Swiss competition for admission to a MD-PhD program. All PhD and MD-PhD students at ISREC-GHI must be enrolled in the program. Exceptions to this rule are limited to students enrolled in the NCCR “Frontiers in Genetics”, other EPFL PhD programs as well as students who transferred onto campus with their group leader. You must be proficient in English to pursue doctoral studies at EPFL. We recommend that applicants whose first language is not English provide us with the results of the TOEFL and/or GRE test. Our joint program uses the EPFL institution code, which is 3253; there is no department code needed.
Application Form: Before applying, please review all the general information provided under “Applicants to the Doctoral School” in the horizontal bar above. You will find the online application form through these links.
Evaluation process: Applications are examined by the EDMS doctoral program committee within a month following the deadline.
