The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Department of Anthropology at is seeking three postdoctoral and three doctoral researchers for the CHINAWHITE project, which is funded by the European Research Council and led by Dr. Shanshan Lan. The selected researchers will be part of the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR) programme group Moving Matters.
Postdoctoral projects (Vacancy number: 19-372):
- Chinese state policy regarding international migrants in China;
- performing whiteness in the transnational corporate business sector in China;
- reconstructing whiteness in China through interracial romance
Requirements:
- PhD degree in Anthropology, Sociology, Media and Gender Studies or other relevant disciplines in the Humanities or Social Sciences, completed after May 2017 or with a fixed completion date before 1 November 2019;
- excellent proficiency in spoken and written English, as well as fluency in Mandarin Chinese;
- ability to collect and analyse data in Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese);
- demonstrate qualitative research experiences in China, preferably on issues of internal or international migration, state immigration policy, gender and transnational intimacy, racism and social (im)mobility;
- outstanding research qualities manifested in a high-quality PhD dissertation and international peer-reviewed publications;
- familiarity or keen interest in ethnographic research methods and approaches;
- ability and willingness to work in a team;
Doctoral projects (Vacancy number: 19-373):
- Performing whiteness in China’s Teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) industry
- Performing whiteness in China’s media, fashion, and entertainment industries
- Performing whiteness in China’s transnational business and entrepreneurship sector
Requirements:
- Master’s degree or equivalent with a relevant specialization within the social sciences or humanities. The degree must have been obtained by the time of application;
- Familiarity or keen interest in ethnographic research methods;
- Independent thinking and critical analytical skills;
- Good collaboration skills and an ability to join interdisciplinary academic communities;
- Preferably previous living or working experiences in China;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
