EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne) is inviting applications for 3 PhD positions in Structural Engineering. The positions are associated with project which addresses stone masonry buildings, the most vulnerable buildings under earthquake loading. Such buildings can fail due to in-plane or out-of-plane failure modes.
The objective of this research project is to investigate the in-plane response of spandrels and panels between openings and to explore whether the out-of-plane response can be approximated by simple nonlinear beam element models. A small part of the research will comprise large-scale experimental testing; the main part of the work will involve the development and validation of new numerical models for the modelling of stone masonry structures.
Requirements:
- Applicant must hold Master’s Degree in civil or structural engineering.
- A strong background in mechanics and good programming skills are required.
- Applicant must possess proficiency in spoken and written English.
Applications:
- Applications to be sent as a single pdf-file to Katrin Beyer at katrin.beyer@epfl.ch with following documents:
- Motivation letter
- CV
- All university records
- Applicants should also apply in parallel to the doctoral program in Civil and Environmental Engineering
- The positions are open until filled.
