The Centre for Research in Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (CRASSH) at University of Cambridge is inviting applications for three postdoctoral Research Associates to join the ERC-funded project, Genius before Romanticism: Ingenuity in Early Modern Art and Science.

About the project:
  • The five-year project examines notions of unique talent, heightened imagination and extraordinary creativity in art and science by exploring the language, theories, practices and products of ingenium (ingenuity) ca. 1450-ca. 1750.
  • Research in years 1-3 addressed the ‘Language of Ingenuity’, ‘Conceptualizing Ingenuity’, and ‘Ingenuity in the Making’.
  • The project is now in the final phase, which is concerned with ‘Ingenious Images’.
Requirements:
  • Applicants must hold a good first degree and a PhD in a field of research directly related to early modern ingenium.
  • The degree must have been awarded by the start of the post.
  • Research experience with early modern texts and/or archives, and/or visual and material culture is desirable; familiarity with current digital humanities research and technology is desirable; experience in researching, sourcing, and managing digital images in a scholarly context is also highly desirable.
  • Applicant must possess fluency in English and excellent reading proficiency in modern languages relevant to the project’s research (German, Dutch, French, Italian or Spanish) and reading proficiency in Latin is desirable.
  • Applicants must also provide evidence of their ability to organize and participate in collaborative research initiatives/projects and to present research findings to a scholarly audience.

Starting date (preferred): 1 September 2018 (Fixed-term)

Funding: available until 30 June 2019 in the first instance
