Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowships in Humanities
The Penn Humanities Forum awards 5 one-year Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowships each academic year to junior scholars in the humanities who are no more than eight years out of their doctorate and who are not yet tenured. Scholars are required to spend a year (September–May) in residence at Penn. Topic for this year fellowship is AFTERLIVES.
Stipend: $54,590 with single-coverage health insurance and a $3000 research fund. Fellows will be given one undergraduate course to teach in addition to conducting their research.
Eligibility:
- Applicant must have PhD degree in humanities or those in such allied fields as anthropology or history of science.
- Applicants who received or will receive their PhD between December 2009 and December 2017 are eligible to apply.
- Applicant must have degree in hand or have passed defense no later than December 2017 to be eligible for the fellowship.
- Ineligible categories include an MFA or any other doctorate such as EdD, social scientists, scholars in educational curriculum building, and performing artists (note: scholars of performance are eligible).
- Fellowship is open to all national and international scholars.
- International applicants are appointed under a J-1 visa only (Research Scholar status).

- Decisions will be announced in late December 2017, when applicants will be notified by email.
Preference will be given to applicants whose proposals are interdisciplinary, who have earlier not used the resources of the University of Pennsylvania, and who would particularly benefit from and contribute to Penn’s intellectual life.
