The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST) invites applications for at least five faculty positions as part of its planned expansion. Targeted areas for the current search include*:

Chemistry: Materials Chemistry (including Polymer Chemistry, Metal-Organic Frameworks), Chemical Biology

Life Sciences: Theoretical Biology; Cell Biology; Behavioral Learning Theory

Mathematics: Big Data Analysis, Discrete Mathematics; Computational Sciences;

Physics: Ultracold Physics; Condensed Matter; Cosmology/Gravitational Waves, Quantum Information

We are seeking candidates with excellent scholarship and creativity. Successful applicants are expected to establish an active program of research, supervise student research and teach in the graduate program. Generous research resources are provided which may be supplemented with external grants. Appointments will be Tenure-Track or Tenured. Starting date is flexible.

How to Apply

All candidates for employment must be submitted online. OIST does not accept emailed or mailed applications. An application is not considered complete unless items 1-6 below (in PDF format) are submitted with the application form.

  2. Curriculum vitae
  3. Summary of previous research
  4. Teaching statement
  5. Research proposal
  6. Three publications of note

Since the online application system does not allow temporary data storage, use the Application Worksheet (DOCX) to prepare all necessary information in advance. Once you have filled out the worksheet, copy the data into the appropriate fields of the online Application Form.

Application closing date

A completed application and all supporting documents should be uploaded no later than Noon on Monday, 24th October, 2016 (any time zone).

What Happens after Submission

When you have successfully submitted an online application for a faculty position at OIST, you will receive an automatically-generated email confirming receipt of your application. If you do not receive the confirmation email, please contact faculty-recruiting@oist.jp.

  1. OIST Search Committee will assess the merits of each application and will shortlist applicants for interview.
  2. If you are shortlisted, OIST recruiting personnel will contact you:
    • To schedule an interview which will be held between January and March 2017.
    • To ask for the names and contact details of five referees for tenure-track position or ten referees for tenured position. Some or all the referees will be contacted by email for a letter of reference. Referees should not be co-authors, mentors or close working colleagues so as to acquire an objective evaluation.

If your application is successful, the information you provided will be archived in OIST’s Human Resources records. If unsuccessful, your information will be retained for up to 12 months and then destroyed.
