University of KwaZulu-Natal offers HEARD PhD Scholarships. The aim of the PhD programme is to produce expertly qualified graduates to advice or to be part of influential policy-making or programme implementing entities in Africa.

Nationality: Applications are welcome from citizens of all African countries. Female candidates and, in the case of South Africa, those from previously disadvantaged backgrounds, are especially encouraged to apply.
Eligibility:
- Applicant must hold a Master’s Degree (first or upper second class pass or its equivalent)
- Applicant must demonstrate research experience
- Applicant must accept to register for a PhD dissertation (full time) at the University of KwaZulu–Natal (UKZN)
- Applicant must make a commitment to remain on the African continent for at least TWO years after graduation.

- Concept note (4-5 page)
- Certified copies of both academic qualifications and full academic records.
- Certified copy of ID/passport
- 2 Academic letter of reference
- Applications must be submitted by completing the online application form.
Fees & Funding:
- The scholarship will commence in February 2018.
- The value of each scholarship is R 600, 000.
- It will be paid in equal tranches over three years.
