The Max Planck Computing and Data Facility (MPCDF) are inviting applications for a Computer Scientist (f/m/d) for Mass Storage and Data Management (Ref. 03/2019).
In the area of data storage, MPCDF uses the High Performance Storage System (HPSS) with several IBM Spectrum Scale clusters as interfaces to it, as well as IBM Spectrum Protect servers and clients.
Requirement:
- Applicant should have a Master’s degree in Computer Science or in Physics, applied Mathematics, or a similar subject, but with a strong and clear experience in IT.
- Good knowledge of Linux as administrator
- Ability to quickly develop scripts using Shell and another scripting language like Perl or Python
- Some experience and affinity to working with hardware
- Creativity for problem solving under changing conditions, as well as accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability for troubleshooting under time pressure
Tasks and responsibilities:
- Day to day proactive monitoring of the server systems, as well as tape libraries and tape drives
- Identify malfunctioning components and performance bottlenecks and implement corrective actions
- Develop tools to automate recurring tasks
- Do regular upgrades of existing systems
- Install and configure new storage systems, including Linux installation and configuration, network configuration, SAN cabling and configuration, storage software installation, configuration and testing
- Perform capacity planning of storage and backup solutions and provide recommendations for new data management projects
- Interact with support engineers in cases where help from software of hardware vendors is needed
- Interact with users to assist them with storage problems and new requirements
- Document issues, processes and implemented solutions
Duration: initially limited for a maximum period of two years with the possibility of extending it to a permanent position
