Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) is seeking a PhD candidate to study the interplay between cellular plasticity and disease, in the laboratory of Dr. Manuel Serrano. The selected candidate will investigate the mechanisms by which cells can establish, or transform, their identity, such as during development, homeostasis, and regeneration. The aim is to understand and ultimately control these processes, so that their decline during aging, or disease states, might be reversed.
Role and responsibilities:
- The student will use the existing in vitro and in vivo experimental models of cellular reprogramming and rejuvenation, and in time, they will contribute towards developing novel approaches.
- Performing experiments, analysing and interpreting data
- Remaining up to date with the literature
- Working with other members of the laboratory to learn techniques and collaborate on parallel projects
- Regular communication and presentation of results/progress in meetings and seminars
Requirements:
- Degree in Biology or Biochemistry; Master in Biomedicine or related subject
- High level of spoken and written English
- High capacity for teamwork, good record keeping, and ability to communicate observations
- Candidates who possess previous experience of Preparation and use of retroviral/lentiviral vectors for shRNA knockdown or over-expression; Cell culture, in particular with stem/progenitor cells; Cellular reprogramming of somatic cells to induced Pluripotent Stem cells (iPS); Analysis of RNA/protein gene expression by qPCR/Western blotting; FACS analysis; Confocal immunofluorescence (in particular for co-localization and use of ImageJ software)
- Experience with vertebrate embryonic development (e.g. human, mouse, or chicken)
How to apply:
- Applications must include a full CV and a Motivation Letter and to be sent by e-mail to: irbjobs@irbbarcelona.org with the Reference: PREDOC/19/03
