Drug Discovery Analytical Chemist Job 965 views

Drug Discovery Unit (DDU) is looking for a highly motivated analytical chemist to work primarily in laboratory as part of our drug discovery teams. The post is available immediately. The role will have a major focus in NMR spectroscopy and in high-performance liquid-chromatography/mass spectrometry (HPLC/MS).

Overview

The LCMS will require method development and analysis of compounds. The NMR spectroscopy will focus on structure elucidation, and fragment and small molecule screening using NMR. Working closely with the NMR Team Leader you will be required to liaise with medicinal chemists, analytical chemistry staff and technical personnel to ensure compounds are analyzed correctly to the highest possible standards.

Position Details

Ideally you will have experience of working in both NMR and LCMS. However, training can be provided in the latter.

Working with the NMR Team Leader and Medicinal Chemistry Team Leaders the role will involve.

  1. Providing high quality sample analysis (both NMR and HPLC/MS) in support of medicinal chemistry projects.
  2. Assist chemists with structural interpretation issues using both one and two dimensional high resolution NMR.
  3. Performing NMR fragment screening assays with the NMR Team Leader.
  4. Assaying library samples using NMR and HPLC/MS as required by medicinal chemistry teams.
  5. Developing and validating new NMR and HPLC/MS assays as required by the NMR Team Leader.
  6. Maintenance of analytical instrumentation, including system suitability testing and liaison with external engineers as required.
  7. Providing innovative ideas in the development of the units capabilities.
  8. Working collaboratively with members of the Drug Discovery Unit and academic and/or industrial collaborators to support drug discovery programmes as required.

Required Qualification:

  • At least a degree, but preferably a PhD in chemistry, pharmaceutical or life sciences or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of the practical operation of NMR spectrometers, both in automated and manual modes.
  • Detailed knowledge of the interpretation of both one and two dimensional, homonuclear and heteronuclear NMR spectra.
  • First-rate organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent computing technical skills, particularly use of MS Office applications.
  • Very strong interpersonal, communication and team working skills.
  • Self-motivated and be able to demonstrate a willingness to go the extra mile to get the job done.
  • A readiness to work flexibly to meet role requirements.
  • First-rate presentation skills.

Desirable attributes:

  • Understanding of the theory of advanced NMR techniques (e.g. pulse programming)
  • Practical and theoretical knowledge of the use of NMR spectroscopy in fragment-based drug discovery.
  • Knowledge/experience in protein-based NMR spectroscopy
  • Practical and theoretical knowledge of HPLC including method development on reversed-phase columns with isocratic and gradient elution.
  • Basic knowledge of electrospray mass spectrometry coupled to liquid-chromatography systems.
  • Knowledge of the maintenance of Bruker NMR spectrometers.
  • Knowledge of Bruker NMR systems and TopSpin software.
  • Some understanding and appreciation of the drug discovery process.
