ETH Zurich Research Grants

ETH Zurich Research Grants are aimed to promote highly creative and original research at ETH Zurich that may outcome in basic new knowledge or technologies. ETH grant welcomes applications that involve high- risk approaches and novel combination of disciplines with potential for excellence and exciting findings in engineering, mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences and architecture.

Eligibility:
  • A grant application should be submitted by a PI and, where appropriate, one or more co-applicants.
  • The PI of grant application must be an ETH Zurich employee with at least an earned doctorate or equivalent qualification.
  • The formal doctoral supervisor (“Leiter / Leiterin der Doktorarbeit”) must either be PI or a co-applicant or s/he must submit a letter of support confirming that s/he will take formal responsibility for doctoral student.
  • The formal doctoral supervisor must also have definite ETH Zurich position for the duration of proposed project.
  • Generally co-applicants will also be ETH Zurich employees. External co-applicants can be accepted if project involves a significant collaboration with a non-ETH Zurich group. However, external co-applicants cannot receive funding from ETH Grants program.
  • PIs are usually required to hold at least one other significant, peer-reviewed, active external grant (e.g., from the SNSF or EU).
  • Submissions from Research Assistants may be considered, even if they do not hold another external grant, but application must be justified and service must be guaranteed for the planned duration of project.
  • A single PI must not submit more than one proposal per call.
ETH Grant funding:
  • ETH Grants should be used to fund doctoral research project completed at ETH Zurich under the supervision of ETH Zurich employees.
  • The usual ETH Grant will include one PhD student and will get funding for student’s salary and for material cost.
  • Well-justified Postdoc research position that are unconditionally necessary for successful completion of a project may be funded exceptionally for a maximum period of 2 years, but also in addition to a doctoral position.
  • The maximum funding level for a project requesting support for a single ETH Zurich research group is CHF 500,000.
  • Funding for interdisciplinary projects involving two or more ETH research groups is limited to CHF 500,000 per group and a total of CHF 1,500,000 per project.

Duration: 3 years (max)

Deadline: There are two deadlines per year, on 1st March and 1st September .

How to apply: Applications should be submitted online using web-based system at www.ethgrants.ethz.ch.

The application should comprise:

  1. A brief summary with key specification on objectives of the proposed research project, methods to be employed, and significance of the expected outputs (max. 400 words).
  2. Goals, landmarks, and expected results of the proposed research.
  3. The rationale for proposed research and state of art of research.
  4. A comprehensive research plan.
  5. A description of resources available for the insight of the research.
  6. A list of recent relevant publications by PI and co-applicants and others.
  7. For projects engaging more than one research group, a description of the value that is added by collaboration.
  8. A description of significance of the project to ETH Zurich.
  9. An clarification why this research is appropriate for consideration within ETH Grant Program.
  10. Any additional information that may help evaluation process.
